FAMILY COUNCIL MINUTES 4-17-10

April 29, 2010

The Davis Family Council met April 17, 2010 in the Giggle Garden at the Davis Facility at 10:00 AM.  Those in attendance were: Ron McNally, Marc and Robbie Diemer, Ray Pizzo, Sharon Nusbaum, new attendees Susan McGranahan, Brenda Boxley, and Beverly Saieed

Everyone viewed the green house and walked the garden before the meeting began.

Marc welcomed everyone and introduced Ruth Finch and Vickie Hardiman as our guest speakers.  Ruth is the Recreation Director for Davis and Vickie is the Activities Director for Champion.  Vickie spoke first explaining what activities she plans for the residents in Champion and how those activities add to the quality of life for those residents.  She explained requirements by the state and how she meets and exceeds those requirements so that the residents have the most opportunities to stay active.  She takes her residents on outings such as shopping, out to eat, a day at the beach, etc. as well as many organized activities on campus.  They do have a Red Hat Society and are still working on trying to get the men involved in a group activity.

Ruth’s job is a bit different from Vickie’s in that her residents are not able to be as “active” as those in assisted living, but they certainly have capabilities to  participate in activities and she works to make sure they have the opportunity to do so.  Some of these include the gardening, crafts, exercise, painting nails, church services, coffee hour, music days, anything to keep them involved in activities.   She noted the residents like to feel useful and when they participate in a craft they prefer it is for something useful, versus busy work.  She could entertain the offer of volunteers who have the ability to help with crafts.

Both emphasized the need to help the residents feel useful and to participate in what would be normal activities in their life before assisted care.

Susan McGrahahan mentioned she is in touch with Karol Dutton, an advocate for assisted living with UNCW, who would be a good contact person for us.

It was suggested we have Mr. Walker Taylor speak at one of our meetings and give us the history of the Davis Community.

Our next meeting will be May 15 at Champion.  We do not have a program at this point for that meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Robbie Diemer  for Walt Whittemore, Sec.)
