Family Council Minutes - May Meeting

May 15, 2010

Davis Family Council minutes
Saturday, May 15, 2010

The meeting was called to order at 10:07 by Ray Pizzo.  Members present included Ray, Dick Desjardins, Ron McNally,  Waverly Pierson, Donna Gonnelly,  Ann LaReau, Howard and Abie Leigh Hussy, Sharon Nusbaum, Walt Whittemore, one other, and guests Robert and Doris Puddy.
After a brief welcoming, Ray introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Richard Desjardins.  Dr. Desjardins is a retired physician, fellow council member, and husband of Betty Desjardins, a Davis resident.
His program included defining what normal behavior entails, a brief overview of how our brains function, and what happens in the brains of those afflicted with dementia.  We also listened to explanations of several types of dementia including Parkinson’s disease, vascular and frontotemporal dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.  Later in the lecture, Dr. Desjardins covered the difficulties of being a caregiver and offered invaluable insight in communicating with loved ones afflicted with dementia such as never arguing with them and talking around topics, but NEVER lying to them.  We also learned the concept of altruistic egoism, or doing things for people with no expectation of reward and the lecture ended with Dr. Desjardins’ personal motto: Ancara Impalo (I’m still learning.)
Ray Pizzo then concluded our meeting by thanking our guest speaker and announcing  that our next meeting will be on Saturday, June 19 in the music room at Champions, and feature as guest speaker Mr. Walker Taylor, who will speak on the history of Champ Davis and The Davis Community.  Mr. Taylor was a member of the original board of directors and a personal friend of Mr. Davis.

Respectfully submitted,
Walter D Whittemore
Secretary
